After feeling somewhat smug that we had missed the worst of the weather suffered by part of the UK, awoke today to a bit of a shock!
A band of quite heavy (for the IoM) snow had fallen and lying on top of already frozen and icy roads.
As a result, the following has happened:
- Mountain road closed (no surprise there);
- Laxey coast and Cronk-Y-Voddy closed (effectivel;y cutting off the north from the south!);
- All schools closed (again, no surprise there - any excuse by teachers!);
- All bus services cancelled;
- All driving tests (& hopefully lessons!) cancelled;
- All refuse collections cancelled;
- All postal services cancelled;
- ...
- ...and worst of all - NO MILK delivery!
- More as I think of them..
One I did like was a tongue-in-cheek comment that "..tonights meeting in Ramsey about Global warming has been cancelled for 5 years!"
One nice thing is the 'community-style' radio where locals all call the stations to advise of localised problems and the presenters put aside their egos to read them out.
I remember something similar happening during a particularly wet TT one year where locals were offering soaked-through campers a chance to have a hot shower and dry out. I just don't think this sort of thing happens in many parts of the Uk where everyone is only interested in their own well being - (rant over)
