Woolworths ('Woolies') in Strand street closed its doors for the final time tonight. Over 100 years in the Isle of Man (I have been told - I wasn't around when they first opened, despite what some of my 'friends' may say!) but now they have gone.
Another victim of today's supermarkets.
Some say they (Woolies) never kept up with the times but most people have said they will miss the store. It has been a household name all of my life.
A place where you could buy anything from chocolate through to DVDs, from envelopes through to frying pans as well as cards,.
It was always the 'small' things that were difficult to locate - where can you get a packet of pins or sewing needles (not that I wanted the sewing needles, it's just an example).
Whenever there was something a little unusual needed, someone would always say 'have you tried in Woolies?'
Oh well, we wait to see what new facility takes over the old shop - or will it remain empty with whitewashed windows for many months, if not years like a lot of other shops around the Island?
