In January 2005, I set off for a trip around half of Australia. This was at the suggestion of a friend, Trevor Currie, who was double-celebrating both his resignation from BT and his 50th birthday.
Including Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, the Ghan train, Darwin, Cairns and Brisbane but the highlight for me was the 8 nights we spent travelling up through the heart of the continent from Adelaide to Alice Springs with a group of 12 others and visiting places such as Coober Pedy, Kings Reach and, of course, Ayres rock (now known by its original name of Uluru).
The trip was divided into separate sections:
- Sydney (arrival)
- Melbourne (by plane)
- South coast road to Adelaide (by car)
- Outback trip to Alice Springs (minibus)
- Alice Springs to Darwin (on The Ghan railway)
- Darwin to Port Douglas & Cairns
- Cairns to Brisbane (by train)
- Brisbane to Manchester (by plane!)
- Manchester to Euston (by train!)
